Eastleigh lecturer recognised for shaping students futures

Greg Cheeseman of Eastleigh College was awarded a silver in the Further Education Lecturer of the Year category of the Pearson National Teaching Awards.

This award recognises Mr Cheeseman’s significant impact in shaping the lives of many budding chefs.

The lecturer regularly goes above and beyond his typical teaching responsibilities.

This includes networking with industry connections during evenings and weekends to find new prospects for the students.

He also frequently travels to support his students at contests and the management of the online presence of East Avenue Restaurant.

Having been with the college for more than a decade, he has helped the student-led restaurant become the most reputed eatery in the Eastleigh area, earning a five-star rating on Trip Advisor.

Mr Cheeseman’s victory sets him among the 102 individuals honoured with a silver award at this year’s ceremony.

From here, he is in contention for the prestigious Gold Award, to be announced later this year.

He said: “I’m honoured to receive this Silver Award in the Pearson National Teaching Awards.

“As teachers we do what we do because we want our students to succeed.

“This can often mean going above and beyond the standard responsibilities of our jobs and the students don’t always realise this but hopefully one day they will.”

Andrew Kaye, chief executive of South Hampshire College Group, gave his congratulations.

Mr Kaye said: “I’m very pleased to congratulate Greg on this fantastic achievement.

“The lovely testimonials I’ve read from his students shows the respect they have for him as a teacher and they are evidently very lucky to have a teacher like Greg.”

“Our hospitality students can enjoy an amazing variety of opportunities as a result of the passionate efforts of Greg and the team.”

This win was announced on the National Thank a Teacher Day, a day of recognising the invaluable contributions of educators.

This campaign, along with the Pearson National Teaching Awards, is organised by the Teaching Awards Trust, honouring the lasting influence educators have on the lives of their students.
