Hythe addict strangled dad leaving him unconscious

Terence Veal, 29, attacked his father, Darren, after he turned up drunk with his dog at the family home, Southampton Crown Court heard.

After arriving at the property in Abbey Close, Hythe, he requested his parents give him his phone before he was told to get out of the house.

He was given the mobile and began walking down the stairs but lost balance and fell when his mother put her arm on him.

He began swearing and was told he could not take the dog with him before a fight broke out between him and Darren.

Veal then got his father in a chokehold from behind before pushing him, causing him to fall on the concrete outside.

Darren Veal was left unconscious and not moving on the floor.

Mrs Veal then rang the police and took her husband into the house after he regained consciousness.

The defendant was arrested outside and appeared “very drunk and emotional” according to officers on the scene.

He told police in interview that he loves his parents “a lot” adding that he is an addict but was 15 days clean.

Veal, who has nine previous convictions, later pleaded guilty to intentional strangulation.

He was also convicted of breaching a suspended sentence that had previously been imposed for offences against his parents.

Speaking at his sentencing on Monday, Oliver Hirsch, mitigating said his client had received money from his nan that day which his parents took from him as they felt he could not be trusted with cash.

“He asked a friend for money. He went and drank some alcohol and that is when he ended up in the house.

“He still says he cannot remember it but he is certainly very remorseful. He describes his dad as his best friend.”

But Recorder Don Tait said Veal is “potentially a high risk to his parents”.

He told him: “Despite you having the best intentions when you are sober you potentially could be a high risk to both of your parents when you have taken substances.

“You have had an unfortunate life not necessarily down to your own fault but things went badly for the family.”

Veal was jailed for 18 months.

Recorder Tait told his parents: “I suspect you have been through hell and back with your son over the years.”
