Man’s sudden death in Winchester ‘unexplained’

On Saturday, roads in Winchester were closed due to an ongoing incident on Middle Brook Street involving emergency services.

At approximately 6pm on June 29, police attended the scene to assist paramedics who were treating a man.

All traffic using the one way system around Friarsgate in Winchester City centre was stopped and the roads temporarily closed. Cars were diverted down the bus lane and police directed traffic away. Stagecoach bus company reported huge delays.

Today the police said the patient died at the scene.

The death is currently being treated as unexplained and officers remain at the scene carrying out enquiries.

The deceased is said to have been a worshipper at Hope Church in Middle Brook Street, a few yards from where he died. Senior Pastor Tim Blaber said: “He was very loved by the church. He had lots of friends, and found hope at the end of his life. Those of us that knew him saw him full of joy.”

Flowers have been left in memory of the man who died. Friends passing by described him as “kind and thoughtful” and told the Chronicle how they got to know him from seeing him in the same place, near to Middle Brook Street Car Park.

They added that they were hoping to find the man’s dog who wears a black collar and has a gold bone tag.
