Southampton Aldi stores test paper packaging for bananas

The fourth-largest supermarket in the UK will substitute the usual plastic bag with a paper band on certain ranges, including its five-pack Nature’s Pick, midi bananas and the Organic six-pack.

Should this plan be implemented nationally, it could eliminate up to 234 tonnes of plastic packaging annually.

This switch is another of Aldi’s strategies to reduce environmental impact through altering product packaging.

Additionally, Aldi plans to introduce thinner bags for onions, reducing plastic use by 13 tonnes a year, and alter packaging on its Specially Selected West Country and Yorkshire block butter to a home-recyclable paper wrap, removing 10 tonnes of non-recyclable packaging yearly.

Aldi’s Southampton stores can be found at:

  • 88-96 Bevois Valley Road, Southampton, SO14 0JZ
  • Auckland Road, Millbrook, Southampton, SO15 OSD
  • Bursledon Road, Southampton, SO19 8BR
